English: The Trustee Company, an investment banking firm, was formed in 1903 by several important Seattle businessmen including Norval Latimer, co-owner of the Squire-Latimer Building. One of their largest investments consisted of purchasing most of the East side of 3rd Avenue South between Yesler Way and Main Streets. In anticipation of the completion of the Great Northern Tunnel and Union station to be built one block south, they began construction of several wholesale buildings in 1904; the Norton and Trustee Buildings. Josenhans & Allan were the designer for all. For their lot at the Northeast corner of 3rd and Main they proposed the pictured 8-story steel-frame structure but chose to only build what they could rent out, which at the time was the first 2 floors, and that was all that was ever built after 1905. The building's current appearance still somewhat resembles the 2 lower floors in the artist's depiction published in the Seattle Times on November 21, 1904. Several years later the Trustee Company would build the Central Building, which itself was never completed to it's original design. |
