The map shows areas where a Protestant confession is the largest religious confession ignoring areas where muslims outnumber protestants e.g. Amsterdam as well as ignoring areas where non religious is dominant e.g. Northern Parts of Germany, The Netherlands. In Latvia and Estonia, Lutheranism is also "dominant" only in the loose sense that it is the largest religious confession ignoring the irreligious majority, adherence is actually below 20%.

In lack of teliable sources, guestimates of subnational concentrations are shown for Northern Ireland, Latvia, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Poland and the Czech Republic. In the east of Northern Ireland, Anglicanism (often counted as a separate denomination from Protestantism) and Presbyterianism coexist and are of comparable importance.

Calvinism in Romania is mostly tied to Hungarian ethnicity.
