DescriptionProtesters suffering from tear gas inhilation at the Falaki Doctor's Field Hospital - 4 February 2012. (7620141976).jpg |
Downtown Cairo - less than 1km east of Tahrir Square. After Egypt's CSF security forces fired tear gas at protesters on Mansour Street, most of them fled northwards towards Falaki Square but as tear gas clouds enveloped the street many had to take refuge in this narrow alley way which was also serving as a makeshift field hospital. The next day while photographing a similar demonstration I had to flee tear gas on neighbouring Falaki Street and took refuge in a narrow alleyway which runs parallel to this one. Unfortunately it had no exit and police entered, arrested everyone there. I was beaten before being detained in prison for 54 days. The protesters had been demonstrating near Egypt's Ministry of Interior over the death of 72 football fans, most of them Al Ahly supporters at a match in Port Said on 1st February. There was a widespread perception of the involvement of some elements in the police and security forces in their deaths. Al Ahly Ultras had been one of the most organized and effective youth groups involved in the protests in 2011 which led to the overthrow of Mubarak. |
