Summary edit

Description
English: Ptarmigan, Lagopus muta Where does that ridiculous "P" come from? Ground detail on Fuar Bheinn with that well known hill dweller emerging from behind a lump of granite. It appears that the spring molt is in progress. This is the male, the female was nearby and not so easily spotted, being all white against the snow.
And for those equally curious:- Its name comes from a Gaelic word, tàrmachan, meaning “grumbler” or “croaker”, presumably in reference to the sound the bird makes. In Gaelic, as you see, there was no “p” at the beginning of the word. But in the late 17th century, some meddlesome person, thinking the word was derived from the Greek ptero (meaning “feather” or “wing”), stuck a “p” at the beginning to reflect its “Greek” origin (that it doesn't have). It's been there ever since. Source here Richard Avery (talk) 13:29, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
