English: Official notice, posted by A. Hanciu, the Mayor Paşcani, Romania. Issued shortly after Romania entered the war against the Soviet Union, it announces an antisemitic curfew and warns that Jewish hostages would be shot in the event of behind-the-lines "sabotage" or "terrorism", including acts attributable to non-Jews. The text makes reference to "communist" agitation, and, unusually, to "communist Legionaries". The epithet is apparently oxymoronic: "Legionaries" were the Iron Guard, a fascist and antisemitic movement which had rebelled against the traditionalist far right, and was therefore repressed by the Ion Antonescu government. The poster possibly references a conspiracy theory, according to which some Legionaries were pro-Soviet, differentiating between them and the loyalist ("Codrenist") wing of the Iron Guard. Here, Hanciu cites specific orders from the fascist hierarchy: Ion Antonescu and Interior Minister Mihai Antonescu. Likewise, we make it known that, in accordance with aforementioned orders, any act of betrayal, sabotage or terrorism on the part of Jews, Jewish families or communists and communist Legionaries shall be punished by death, those Jews held in custody as hostages being first in line for the executions.") |
