Description
English: The portrait of Francesco I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, is part of the so-called "serie aulica" (or "of the most serene princes"), a collection of portraits of the most important members of the House of Medici. The work, commissioned by Ferdinando I, Francesco's younger brother and successor, was might certainly painted together with the two portraits of Ferdinando himself and his wife, Christina of Lorraine. Pulzone was called expressly from Rome to paint them in 1590 and in Francesco's portrait too we can see the suggestive solution of “the canvas into the canvas”. Pulzone's painting replaced another previous potrait of Francesco I, painted between 1584 and 1586 by Santi di Tito.
