Se tienen dos cuerpos masivos uno mayor (M1) y otro menor (M2) orbitando. Los Puntos de Lagrange son aquellos 5 puntos en donde un tercer cuerpo aún menor (M3, o varios menores) se mantendrían estacionarios debido a las fuerzas gravitatorias y con las centrípetas girando en conjunto con el de masa menor alrededor del de masa mayor, siempre manteniendo tales posiciones y distancias (ver imagen). El punto L1: el tercer cuerpo se encuentra en esta posición estacionaria donde se equilibran o compensan las dos fuerzas de atracción de las dos grandes masas (M1 y M2). El punto L2: aquí el tercer cuerpo quedaría estacionario dado que la atracción gravitatoria de los dos cuerpos mayores compensa la fuerza centrífuga causada por el menor (M2). El punto L3: en este punto estacionario la fuerza gravitatoria combinada de la masa M2 con la masa M1 hace que el tercer objeto orbite con el mismo período que el de masa menor (M2), podría ubicarse en ese punto una "anti-Tierra". Los puntos L4 y L5: estos puntos estacionarios del tercer cuerpo menor se ubican en los vértices de triángulos equiláteros cuya base común es la recta que une las dos masas mayores (M1 y M2). Estos puntos, así como el cuerpo de masa menor (M2), no giran sobre el cuerpo grande, sino sobre el baricentro (centro de gravedad) de ambos cuerpos.
