Summary

edit
Description The Pure Oil Building in the Michigan-Wacker Historic District in Chicago (1926). It was considered the tallest building in the world outside of New York City upon its completion. Created to serve the diamond industry, the building originally featured a car elevator that could lift cars up to the 22nd floor to prevent tenants from being mugged. The entire 24th floor had to be used for the elevator's machinery; it was removed for more office space after World War II. The building's large dome was originally built as a restaurant, called the Stratosphere Lounge. Allegedly, during prohibition, Al Capone operated the joint as a speakeasy. Today, Helmut Jahn operates a showroom in the dome. The four turrets originally stored cast iron water tanks that would have been used in case of a fire.
