Putto on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Made in the mid-1700s by Ferdinand Dietz in Germany, this painted and gilded wood statue is 22 inches high. Putto is an Italian word meaning "boy" or "child". In art, puttoes are chubby male children, usually nude and sometimes winged. They represent secular passion. A putto is not the same as a cherub. A cherub has four animal faces and several pairs of wings A putto is not a cupid. A cupid is usually depicted as either a chubby male child or a trim, adolescent male, and always with wings. Cupids are depicted with a bow and arrow, which indicate Cupid's ability to bestow the agony of love on other people |
