Pvt. Peter Riley (CP 1202), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Peter Riley, Company A, 10th New York volunteers, who received a gunshot wound to the left femur at the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 3rd, 1864. The patient recovered, but the healing resulted in a shortening of his left leg. Caption reads: “Comminuted G.S. Fract. of Femur. Pvt. Peter Riley Co. A. 10th N.Y..” History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 2, 1865. Ward 2, Bed 53—Name, Peter Riley, Private Co. A. 10th New York Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital June 11, 1864, with a gun-shot fracture of left femur. Wound received at the battle of Cold Harbor, Va., June 3, 1864. Ball entering anterior surface of thigh, four inches below anterior superior spinous process of ilium, passing directly backwards, producing a compound comminuted fracture of upper third of femur, ball lodging in the muscular substance of the thigh posteriorly. Extension and counter extension used, but removed on account of the inflammation of the parts and severe pain produced. Three weeks after his admission free incisions were made for the discharge of pus. Patient slowly recovered with four and a half (4 1/2) inches shortening of the limb.
