English: Qualitative apparent retrograde motion of Mars. Italiano: Ricostruzione qualitativa del moto retrogrado apparente di Marte visto dalla Terra. Il punto nero al centro dei cerchi concentrici (contrassegnato con S) è il Sole; i punti blu (contrassegnati con T1, T2, ... , T7) sono sette successive posizioni della Terra a intervalli regolari di tempo; i punti rossi (contrassegnati con M1, M2, ... , M7) sono sette successive posizioni di Marte a intervalli regolari di tempo; il fatto che l'orbita della Terra abbia un raggio minore di quella di Marte implica che periodicamente la Terra "supera" Marte (nel disegno, qualitativo, la Terra copre circa tre quinti della sua orbita nel tempo che Marte impiega a coprire solo un quarto della sua); dunque la proiezione di Marte contro le stelle fisse (indicata dai numeri 1, 2, 3, ... , 7 e riprodotta in cima al disegno con l'aggiunta delle variazioni di latitudine) si muove in modo irregolare: il pianeta sembra avanzare normalmente, in direzione est, tra 1 e 2 e tra 2 e 3, poi retrocedere muovendosi in direzione ovest passando per 4 fino a 5, e infine riprendere il suo regolare cammino passante per 6 e 7. |
