Description
English: Quarry tramroad, Grove, Isle of Portland. Stone sleeper blocks of a former tramroad in the Admiralty Quarries, so called because much of the Portland stone from here was used to build the breakwaters round Portland Harbour in the mid-19th century. The grey building on the extreme left marks the start of a rope-worked incline whence the wagons were lowered down to the dockyard. To the right of this the white buildings with multiple chimneys are the Young Offender Institution at Grove.
