| Description |
English: Quartzite is a crystalline-textured, quartzose rock. They form by intermediate- to high-grade metamorphism of quartzose sandstones or siltstones. The term "quartzite" has also been applied to very hard, very well-cemented quartzose sandstones that have not undergone metamorphism. Metamorphic quartzite is sometimes called "metaquartzite" to prevent confusion.
The quartzite is a Piedmont metamorphic basement rock and is part of a metavolcanics succession. It forms part of the footwall block at the eastern boundary fault of a Triassic-aged rift basin (half graben) called the Dan River Basin (a.k.a. Danville Basin). Locality: loose piece from Oak Ridge Farms Road exit ramp outcrop - roadcut along the north-bound exit ramp off Route 58 at Oak Ridge Farms Road, just west of Vandola & west of Danville, southern Pittsylvania County, southern Virginia, USA (36° 34' 30.09" North latitude, 79° 31' 20.13" West longitude) |
