Editorial cartoon in favor of the Republicans who would only support Matthew Quay for a third term during the deadlocked 1899 senatorial race.

Summary

edit
Description
English: Editorial cartoon from the Philadelphia Inquirer concerning the Senate election in 1899 before the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Matthew Quay's re-election split the Republican Party and the election ended deadlocked after 79 ballots; Quay was elected by a new legislature in 1901. Here, the "Stalwarts" who support Quay nail his colors to the mast, symbolizing their refusal to consider a compromise candidate.
