English: Very large framed painting of Royal arms of Queen Anne, dated 1707, hanging on west wall of north aisle of Pilton Church, North Devon. Initials at top: "A R" (Latin: Anna Regina, "Queen Anne"). Motto: Semper Eadem ("Always the same"). Lower side of gilt frame inscribed in black capital letters: "William Frost Alexander Coats Church Wardens 1707". This was made at about the same time as the "Queen Anne's Walk" mercantile exchange was built by the local leading merchants, landed gentry, nobility and political personalities in the adjoining town of Barnstaple, a few hundred yards from Pilton Church, also with that queen's statue on top of the building presented by a member of the powerful Rolle family. Almost identical to one in nearby Pilton Church (see |
