Español: QUETZALLI: hermosa pluma, Y TOTOTL: pájaro. Ave trepadora de América tropical, del género caluro, llamada científicamente pharomacrus mocinno, calurus paradiseas, y calurus resplendens, algo mayor que el mirlo, con plumaje suave de variados colores, destacando el verde iridiscente y esmeralda, de sus alas y larga cola de dos plumas que pueden medir hasta 90 cm, un moño sedoso y verde en la cabeza, mucho más desarrollado en el macho que en la hembra ( de colores más discretos y sin cola larga). Es el ave nacional de Guatemala, está en peligro de extinción debido a la deforestación, la caza y el cambio climático. De costumbres solitarias, la pareja hace la nidada en los huecos de los árboles o nidos abandonados, generalmente ponen dos huevos. Se alimentan de reptiles, insectos, anfibios, pequeños mamíferos. Sus alas extendidas abarcan un metro y le permiten un vuelo ininterrumpido de 30 Km. |
