DescriptionQuin - Knappogue Castle - View to southeast - geograph.org.uk - 1639259.jpg |
English: Quin - Knappogue Castle - View to southeast This medieval tower house was built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara. This property served as a battlefield and dwelling place. In 1571, it became the seat of the MacNamara clan. Donagh MacNamara was a leader of 1641 rebellion. In 1659, the property was confiscated by Cromwell's parliament and granted to Arthur Smith. In 1670, the property was returned to the MacNamaras, who sold it to the Scotts in 1800. They did major restoration & extension work. In 1855, the property was sold to Lord Dunboyne, who continued with the restoration. In the 1920s, the property belonged to a local farmer and fell into disrepair. In 1966, the Honorable Mark Edwin Andrews of Houston, TX and his wife (a prominent American architect) bought the property and returned the castle to its 15th century status. Shannon Development bought the property in 1996. Our tour group attended a medieval banquet here. The castle includes a state room apartment. |
