Description
English: Rome, via Appia Antica: dedication of the hermit of the church of Quo Vadis as Santa Maria delle Piante (1830)
This Church is named "Santa Maria delle piante" and "Domine quo vadis" of the footprints is named so for the apparition of Our Lord which appeared to St. Peter when this glorious Apostle was persuaded, even violently by the Christians to escape imprisonment and leave Rome, he came to this Via Appia, and when he came to this place he met with our Lord, who headed towards Rome, in whose marvelous presence he told him 'Domine quo vadis;' and he replied, 'Venio Romam iterum crucifigi;/I'm coming to Rome to be crucified' intending immediately the mystery of St. Peter and recalling that he formerly had predicted such a death when he gave him the government of his church but turning around, he returned to Rome and the Lord disappeared, but his footprints appeared in a flint surface of the road and from here this church took the nickname name of the 'footprints/soles,' and from the words of St. Peter the name of 'Domine quo vadis.' In the middle of this stands the imprints of the footprints of Our Lord taken from that flint wherein it was impressed, which at present is preserved in the church of S. Sebastiano.
