Description
Svenska: TEMPELGARNITYR (Altarset). Kangxi, Qing-dynasty.Porcelain altar set decorated in underglaze blue. Qing dynasty, Kangxi period Such sets are known in Chinese as wu gong “five offering vessels”, and they were designed for altars in temples, tombs and household shrines. A typical ensemble (as here) included a central incense burner flanked by pairs of candlesticks and vases for flowers, feathers, branches of coral or other appropriate decorations. This set was quite difficult to create in porcelain, for the square shape of pieces meant that they were slab-built rather than thrown, while the large incense burner would have been hard to fire successfully. A magnificent altar set of this type must originally have been ordered for a Daoist temple or personal shrine. It has auspicious Daoist designs on every facet of its body, for example the sides of the central incense burner are densely painted, with from the top: a lid knop in form of a bai ze, the lid bearing lucky emblems tied with cord; the top register on the censer body with lucky emblems; the waisted mid-section having the Three Star Gods of Longevity, High Rank and Happiness; the belly the Lucky Twins Hanshan and Shide, representing harmony and mirth; and on the four feet more bai ze. The density and quantity of decoration, and the square-built construction, means that the set must have been quite costly. It came from a Swedish Consul in Hong Kong, who died in 1876.
