Description
English: Lime quarry on Robben Island where prisoners were subjected to hard labour. Calcrete mined and crushed by prisoners was used for surfacing the island's roads. The man-made tunnel is visible on the rear left is the place where prisoners, while ostensibly relieving themselves, could talk in private. The stone cairn of remembrance started by Nelson Mandela and built up by other ex-political prisoners is visible on the front right. The stark whiteness of the quarry caused a glare that damaged Mandela's eyesight. Photograph taken from tour bus (passengers not allowed to disembark).
