Stamp of Romania; 1969; commemorative stamp of the issue "Frescos from Romanian Monasteries"; stamp is showing a fresco from the "Moldavian Monastery" at the Romanian village Vatra Moldoviței (contemporary district of Suceava, the "Suceava" is a river); The stamp motive shows the a detail of the fresco painting "Besieged Constantinople Saved by an Icon" by an unknown artist.; meant is not how often called the siege of 626 A.D., rather it's illustrated the so-called "Second Siege of Constaninople by the Ottoimans" in 1453; stamp postmarked
Note:
The monastery was built in 1532 during the reign of the Moldovian ruler Petru IV Rareș. The "Annunciation Church" of this monastery is decorated with many frescos in the interior as well as at exterior "...finished five years after the church was built ... The large and vivid Siege of Constantinople frescoes were inspired by a poem dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as a thanksgiving for her intervention in saving Constantinople from a Persian attack....".
