This is the world's first pocket computer. It was introduced as the PC-1 by Radio Shack and PC-1211 by Sharp. It could be programmed in the common "BASIC" language and was very useful for engineers and scientists. In addition to its computing capabilities it was a super calculator.

Radio Shack began as a single store retail and mail order company in 1921 and developed into a small chain of stores. In 1963 Charles Tandy bought the Radio Shack chain. In 1977 Radio Shack introduced the TRS-80 Model 1 Microcomputer. It was a large, desk type computer and it sold 10,000 units during the first month. Over the next 3 years miniaturization progressed to the point where this model could fit into a shirt pocket and used batteries that would power it for a few hours.
