Description

I reprocessed this older photo, with some post-production tricks I've learned since taking it. Not flawless, but such a spectacular outcrop! The etching in the surf zone is remarkable.

Another name for this rock type is "ribbon chert", for the colorful yellows & reds it sometimes weathers to. It was formed in deep water, far offshore, somewhere in the ancestral Pacific. Transported with the drift of the Pacific tectonic plate to the formerly active trench off ancestral California. Most of this rock's neighbors were stuffed down under the North American plate, but some were scraped off, and badly beaten-up in the process.
