If degenerated in the parenchyma, the glands will reduce insize, but not entirely disappear, and radium treatment will convert thegland capsule into benign fibrous tissue. This has been frequently dem-onstrated by laboratory- study and by gross examination. Then thegland may be incised, curetted, or drained with comparative safety tothe patient, after which a tube of radium properly screened, or radiumneedles, may be inserted through the capsule of the gland into the adja-cent tissues as an additional safeguard. These needles are used for in-sertion into malignant growths and glands, or into an organ containedin the peritoneal cavity after exposure of the lesion by laparotomy—the pylorus for example. Results are obtained by this method of radiumapplication that cannot be secured by the application of radium in cap-sule or plaque. This method of application is more accurate and a com-paratively small quantity of radium applied in needles will produce evenmore favorable results than a large quantity applied from the outsideor inserted in capsule form into the malignant tissue through an incision.Inder th
