Summary edit

Description
English: Rama, Philadelphia Museum of Art. The description from the museum reads: "Rama, Around 975, India (Tamil Nadu). For use in a procession, Copper alloy. Rama is a great hero and ideal king, and one of the most important of the god Vishnu's ten avatars (earthly incarnations). This temple hall incorporates many images of Rama along with other characters from his story as it is told in the Ramayana. In its original condition, the hall actually told the entire Ramayana in continuous reliefs that ran above the pillars (some of the reliefs have survived and you can see them here). As if filled with breath, this graceful bronze represents one of the finest achievements of the skilled sculptors employed by the powerful Chola kings of southern India. Purchased with the W. P. Wilstach Fund, the John D. McIlhenny Fund, and with funds contributed by the Women's Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in honor of their 100th anniversary, W1982-106-1"
