Summary edit

Description
English: Ramsons (Allium ursinum). This plant was growing in the wooded shade alongside the cycle route, not far from Dunglass Roundabout. In woodland, it often occurs in large patches. It is a member of the Lily family, which also includes Wild Daffodil, Snowdrop, Spring Snowflake, and Summer Snowflake: 942436.

Richard Mabey's "Flora Britannica" notes that, by transposition, it is sometimes mistakenly called "ransoms", but another common name for this plant is Wild Garlic; it imparts a strong and unmistakable odour to woods where it grows.

This plant has also left its influence on place names [see e.g. Margaret Gelling, "Place Names in the Landscape"]; the Old English root "hrams-" gives rise to such names as Ramsey Island (off Pembrokeshire), Ramshorn (Staffordshire), Ramsbottom (Lancashire), and many others.
