Summary edit

Description
English: 'Summer Saturdays in the West': Newquay - Newcastle express descending Rattery Bank.
On this infamous day, 27 July 1957 (see SX7760 : Manchester - Penzance express ascending Rattery Bank near Tigley etc.), one of the protracted Holiday services was the 08.15 from Newquay, which via Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Birmingham, Sheffield and York was not due at Newcastle-on-Tyne until 21.52; it was on time here at 10.55, but heaven knows when it got there this night. It is headed here by the prototype Collett 'Hall' 4-6-0 No. 4900 'Saint Martin', rebuilt in 12/24 from 'Saint' No. 2925 (built 9/1907) and withdrawn 4/59 (early); in spite of leading, this engine was the Pilot - normally put 'inside' on the GWR, for we saw it later assisting a Down train. The train engine is No. 4960 'Pyle Hall' (built 9/29, withdrawn 9/62).
