Summary edit

Description
English: Rear and side of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad caboose C-2423 at the former B&O roundhouse in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. The Midwest Railway Preservation Society has owned the roundhouse since 1954.

This is a B&O class I-12 caboose, built in 1941 at the B&O's shop at Keyser, West Virginia. It has a steel rib frame and wooden sides, and an unusual rolled "wagon top" roof. It features "blister" bay windows (with hand-powered windshield wipers) on either side to allow occupants to see the rest of the train. It was originally painted red with white lettering, with green window frames, doors, and interior. It had a stainless steel water tank in the ceiling, which fed a sink and toilet. There was a bed, ice box, and coal-fired stove to keep the occupants (a conductor and brakeman) warm.

The stove was converted to oil after World War II. The caboose was repainted blue with yellow ends (indicating it was a "pool" caboose) in 1965. When the B&O merged with the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1974 to create the Chessie System, it was repainted in Chessie colors. It was renumbered as Chessie caboose 902423 and placed on local train service in Cleveland.

The caboose was retired from service in the late 1980s. CSX, the successor to the Chessie System, donated the caboose to the MRPS in January 1990.
