English: Wow, what a surprise! I was so busy photographing those mundane cargo barges and wondering what they will carry and where they will go that this large passenger vessel caught me completely by surprise. This is Xin Jian Zhen, (the name of the boat), and notes about her appear in the next caption. It is really amazing to see the large variety of river traffic on the Shanghai Huangpu River. We can see all manner of boats from service boats, catamarans, cruise boats, cargo barges and now passenger ships. The Huangpu is, on the average, just 183mtt wide, but more than 2,000 oceangoing ships compete with the 20,000 barges, fishing junks, and and row boats that ply the Huangpu every year. (I did not see any row boats though- wonder if they can survive the never ending flow of mechanized vessels, some of them pretty large). As the river curves north, a small island called Fuxing Dao, is proposed to be developed into an ecological and recreational theme park. A good thing too with all this construction and commercial activity around. (Shanghai, China, May 2017)
