| Description |
English: Red Lodge, plaque for James Cowles Prichard Prichard (1786-1848)was an interesting but little known early anthropologist and physician. Refusing to join the family iron works, he decided to study medicine but as a Quaker could not enter the Royal College of Physicians; instead he apprenticed himself to a Quaker obstetrician in Bristol. Later he became an Anglican in order to acquire qualifications; during his career he proposed radical theories about the genesis and provenance of the human race, which foreshadow Darwin, and he also had significant ideas regarding linguistics and mental illness.
