English: Quartz monzodiorite in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.
This reddish-colored rock is a strongly altered, augite-quartz monzodiorite. It is part of the widespread Duluth Complex, a ~1.1 billion year old suite of igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota that is associated with volcanism in the Lake Superior segment of the ancient Mid-Continent Rift System. Quartz monzodiorite is a granite-like rock - a phaneritic (coarsely-crystalline), intrusive igneous rock. Compared with true granite, quartz monzodiorite has less quartz and less potassium feldspar.
