DescriptionReikart House Hotel, Amherst, New York - 20230313.jpg |
English: The Reikart House, 5000 Main Street, Amherst, New York, March 2023. Opened in 2017 as "the Town of Amherst's first and only full-service, upscale boutique hotel", the Reikart House occupies the former site of the Lord Amherst Motor Hotel, a Duane Lyman-designed building from 1962 that sported a similar but simpler aesthetic. Here we have a strikingly high-style and elegantly detailed rendition of the Colonial Revival, making for one of Western New York's few notable examples of New Classical architecture: a style that, as its name implies, pointedly eschews any hint of Modernism in favor of a straightforward continuation of the Greco-Roman-derived aesthetic that typified the built environment of earlier centuries. The façade of this low-slung, sprawling structure is centered on a fine tetrastyle Doric temple front crowned consecutively by a frieze, pediment, and decorative pinnacled cupola. The name was chosen by Iskalo Development in homage to Frank and Dolly Reikart, Amherst's "first family of hospitality" who initially gained fame on the vaudeville circuit as a husband-and-wife double act before retiring to their hometown, where Frank operated a barbershop that doubled as a playhouse where he regularly regaled Sunday drivers along Transit Road with impromptu magic shows, performances on his trademark novelty musical instruments, and frequent appearances by Jacko, the couple's pet capuchin monkey. Today, their namesake hotel offers 80 standard guest rooms decorated in a mix of "period, traditional and modern elements", twelve themed suites developed in partnership with Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village that pay tribute to various personalities and landmarks significant to the history of Amherst, a cocktail lounge with fireplace, and an onsite restaurant, Jazzboline, serving upscale fare. The Reikart House is operated by the Denver-based Greenwood Hospitality Group and is a member of Marriott International's Tribute Portfolio family of hotels. |
