Summary
editDescriptionReliance Building (7187043031).jpg | The Reliance Building in Chicago, a national landmark (1895). John Root developed an innovating floating raft system, which allowed tall buildings to be built in the soft soil of Chicago. Root died before the building was completed, and only the first floors reflect his design. Daniel Burnham recruited Boston architect Charles B. Atwood to complete the building. It is considered a proto-modernist building due to the abnormally large amount of natural light that the building allowed through its many windows. Today, the Reliance Building is a famous example of the good that can come out of landmark restoration. Badly dilapidated by the 1980s, it seemed destined for destruction after the recent demolition of the nearby McCarthy Building. A deal was finally stuck to convert the building into a luxury hotel. |
