Relief depicting the god Bacchus at a banquet at farmer lcarius. Painted terracotta. 0-25 AD. Rome. The bearded and drunken man on the right is Bacchus, god of wine and debauchery. Two satyrs help him. The host of this banquet is lcarius, the man in the middle. He was a farmer from the Greek region of Attica to whom, according to a myth, Bacchus would have learned the art of cultivating the vine. When Icarius tasted the very first wine to shepherds in Attica, they thought he wanted to poison them and killed him. In despair, her daughter hanged. Bacchus avenged them by causing a great drought and tormenting all the girls of Attica, who hanged themselves in their turn. This relief was painted (see traces of paint on the hair and beard of Bacchus). Now in the British Museum, inv. 1805.0703.324. Picture taken at the Oog in oog met de Romeinen (Eye to Eye with the Romans) Exhibition in the Gallo-Romeins Museum of Tongres. |
