Summary edit
DescriptionRemains of an abandoned settlement above Coulachan Burn - geograph.org.uk - 694950.jpg |
English: Remains of an abandoned settlement above Coulachan Burn The remains of the settlement can be seen on the side of the hill above the track. Nearby there is a an information sign placed by the "History with Boots on" initiative which created a series of waymarked routes passing historical sites in the area. The information on the sign for this way-point is:
"The green among the heather - Step this way to experience the world's worst timeshares! Here there are no toilets, no showers, no running water even! They might seen primitive to us, but to the families who occupied them every winter they were a comfortable home. With their fires burning and their cattle housed at one end (the downhill end), they were cosy too. In the summer the families were glad to get out though. In two separate moves they'd travel to their summer shielings - an even more basic hut higher up the hill. First the men would take the cattle up in what was called the 'little flit', and then the women and children would follow in the 'big flit'. It's a word which is still used in Scotland - when someone moves home, they'll say they're flitting." |
