Description

The aqueduct of Roman Mainz, was built after 70 CE, by soldiers of the recently founded First Legion Adiutrix and the old Fourteenth Legion Gemina. It was part of a series of construction works, which included the rebuilding of the legionary fortress on the Kaestrich, this time made out of stone. The new aqueduct brought water to the bathhouse. It had a length of no less than nine kilometer. The source was near a village now called Finthen (from Latin fontes), and the remains of the arches can still be seen along a street that is called "An den Römersteinen" ("near the Roman rocks").
