Description

U.S. Army Col. Kristin Ellis and Italian Army Lt. Col. Francesco Patalano represented Caserma Ederle at a 9-11 commemorative ceremony in Padova, Italy. Ellis is the director of U.S. Army Africa’s G-6, Information Technology division and Patalono is USARAF’s Deputy of G-4, Logistics. Ellis and Patalano joined more than 400 ceremony spectators and participants held at The Memoria e Luce, a memorial for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York City. Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony were Barbara Degani, president of Padova province and Kyle Scott, U.S. counsel general in Milan, Italy.

Memoria e Luce features a twisted steel beam salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center that was donated to the Regione de Venetto.

Designed by Daniel Libeskind, the memorial represents “The Light of Liberty shining through the Book of History." According to the official Website, the book is open to the memory of the heroes of Sept. 11, with the left-hand page holding a dramatic beam salvaged from the World Trade Center attack. The memorial was completed in September 2005 in collaboration with Permasteelisa, a global design, engineering and construction corporation. (U.S. Army Africa photo by Rich Bartell)
