Summary
editDescriptionRemigius Ledger stone, Lincoln Cathedral.png |
English: Ledger stone attributed to Bishop Remigius, but more probably Bishop Alexander. This is located under the eastermost arch of the north arcade of the aisle at Lincoln Cathedral. This has long been attributed as the tombstone of Bishop Remigius (died 1092), but it has been convincingly argued by Professor Zarnecki (Zarnecki G, (1988, 2nd ed.) Romanesque Sculpture: The sculpture of Lincoln Cathedral, Honeywood Press, Lincoln, pp. 93-96) that this is the tombstone of Bishop Alexander of Lincoln (died 1148). The tomstone is of black Tournai and the carving depicts the Tree of Jesse. This is one of five Tournai tombsones or ledger slabs, the others being at Bridlington Priory, Westminster Abbey, Old Sarum (now in Salisbury Cathedral) and Ely Cathedral. The tombstone in Ely is to Bishop Nigel, a cousin of Alexander and that at Salisbury is to Bishop Roger, the uncle of Alexander. |
