Description

French WW1 era light tank The remarkable Renault FT was the first production tank to have its armament fitted in a fully rotating turret and is therefore considered to be the world’s first modern tank. Roughly 4,500 were produced and it went on to serve with 27 countries with the final examples not being retired until 1949. The type fought in the First World War, the Russian Civil War, the Polish-Soviet War, the Chinese Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War, World War 2, the Franco-Thai War, the Turkish War of Independence and finally by Egypt in the 1948 Arab – Israeli War. According to the museum, this example was recovered from Afghanistan during 2007 by French Military Special Forces. Restored as a static exhibit, it originally carried a 37mm gun but now has the ‘machine gun’ turret from one of the two Renault FTs that the museum keeps in running condition. It is seen on display in the ‘France 1914-1918’ hall. Musée des Blindés, Saumur, Pays de la Loire, France
