Quantum dots generated using density functional theory calculations are enlarged to macroscopic proportions and plunged into a tank of water.

Summary edit

Description
English: The atomistic models in this image were used to study the theoretical efficiency of quantum dots for photovoltaic applications. Spheres were carved out of simulated bulk material and the resulting dangling bonds were pacified with hydrogen and various other atoms. The positions of the atoms in the resulting structures were relaxed using density functional theory calculations. This pattern of constructing atomistic models forms the basis of many studies that are performed by scientists doing research in computational chemistry and physics. The models were later used to render this image using the free and open source 3D creation suite Blender.
