Fe, via Fullerton, is 0.7 per cent, and to introduce any gradeheavier than this at this point would reduce the freight engine tonnage rat-ings. This is highly objectionable since it reduces the number of cars inevery train which is tilled u)) to the tonnage limit of the locomotive. Opposite \\illow Street which is about the southerly throat of thepresent freight yard, the present main line tracks of the Santa Fe are atan elevation of 250 feet. It is proposed, by constructing two tracks whiclifor convenience we will call M and N, parallel to the two tracks adjacentto the river the nearer nineteen feet west of them and descending southerly,to pass under a proposed viaduct on Seventh Street and then to connect bothM and N with the tracks adjacent to the river, and also, by a single trackascending southerly to connect M and N with the coach yard tracks, etc.,near the location of the present Pullman building. This situation we haveattempted to show graphically in the accompanying drawing.

If this elevation is changed from 22)^.7to 239.7, a 0.57 per cent grade can be obtained, which appears to be prac-ticable since the grade at this point should be equal to somewhat less thanthe ruling grade on the district, on account of slow movement, virtual profile,etc. Raising the elevation of the proposed grade at this point 4.0 feet doesnot appear to introduce any objectionable features; the toes of slope of theviaduct approach are simply moved about 100 feet further away from theriver, and on the west, to the east side of Santa Fe Avenue.
