Text Appearing Before Image:
us amerkanus answers perfectly to specimens contained in the National Museum from Cumberland Gulfand the opposite coast of Greenland, and is undoubtedly referable to reinhardli. It is quite likely the specimensrecorded by authors as rupestris horn, the high northern latitudes along the Greenland coa.st and the adjoining mainlandmay also be referable to this species. , While reinhardli is distinguished by the heavy black barrings which dividesthe feathers into two orthreeparts and the interspaces with grayish and buffy-brown spaces, rupestris has its plumagecovered with fine vermiculations and dottings of varying shades of brown, bnffy, and black. It was my intentionto make a satisfactory arrangement of the American Ptarmigan, but I find the amount of material contained in theNational Museum collection insufficient, as the individual variation among these birds requires a large series of speci-mens from their entire range in order to give satisfactory data for generalizations. The adult female does not differ materially from typical Lagopvs rupesiris in corresponding plumage. The designations of the colors in the above description refer to Mr. Eidgways Nomenclature of Colors. Lag-opus rupestris atkhensis (Turner). Turners Ptarmigan. Among the specimens secured by Mr. L. M. Turner, during his i^esidence iu the AleutianIslands, are two Ptarmigans, which, ui)on examination, prove to represent a well-marked geo-graphical race of rupestris. His specimens were secured June 7 and May 29 upon Atka Island, atthe extreme western end of the Aleutian chain
