Description
English: Republic F-105D-5-RE Thunderchief (s/n 59-1719) in flight. This aircraft was shot down over Laos on 16 January 1966 while being assigend to the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 355th Tactical Fighter Wing, Takhli RTAFB. The pilot, Captain Wood, was one of a flight of five F-105s on a photo reconnaissance over Xieng Khouang Province, Laos. While over the target the flight received 37mm antiaircraft fire on their passes over the target, and Captain Wood's plane was suddenly missing. A Pathet Lao source interrogated in Laos in 1974 described the recovery of a U.S. airman who ejected from an aircraft hit by flak from the Pathet Lao Regional Headquarters at Phou Kout. The airman reportedly died shortly after capture.
