Summary edit
DescriptionRestored Black House - geograph.org.uk - 1358682.jpg |
English: Restored Black House. Black houses are numerous in the Western Isles, in three states of repair - ruinous (some with bare walls and extant gable-ends, others just a heap of stones); converted (with a felt or corrugated-iron replacement roof, generally used as stores); or like this one, carefully restored and with 'all mod cons'. There is a school of thought which would have the twin-chimneyed dwellings classed as 'White Houses', claiming that a true black house was an earlier style, which had no chimney - the smoke from the central fire simply made its own way out through the thatch .... however, it is probable that the very term 'black house' (tigh dubh)comes from a misunderstanding of the original Gaelic 'tigh tughadh', which simply means 'thatched house'. See 1358637 to view the house from the opposite direction. |
