Summary edit

Description
English: A grayish-tan plume of volcanic dust poured southward from the Katmai volcano and blew towards the Gulf of Alaska in mid-November, 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of November 13.

As seen in satellite images, the resulting resuspended ash cloud extends approximately 120 km (72 miles) over Shelikof Strait and Kodiak Island at an altitude of up to 3 km (1.8 miles).

The blowing dust is not the result of recent volcanic activity, but is re-suspended ash from the 1912 eruption of Novarupta-Katmi. The resuspended ash cloud extended more than 72 miles (120 km) over Kodiak Island and Shelikof Strait.

According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory the phenomenon of resuspended ash often occurs during times of high winds and dry, snow-free conditions in the Katmai area, as well as other young volcanic areas of Alaska. All of the volcanoes of the Katmai area, including Snowy, Griggs, Katmai, Novarupta, Trident, Mageik, and Martin remain quiet at color code Green.
