Title
English: Retorts at Pacific American Fisheries salmon canning factory, 1910
Description
English: Pacific American Fisheries, in Bellingham, Washington, was one of the largest salmon canning companies in the Pacific Northwest. During each salmon run, PAF fishers caught tons of fresh salmon for the cannery. Cannery workers gutted and cleaned the fish and then packed the meat into cans. The cans were then heated in huge steam retorts to cook and preserve the fish.

This 1910 photo shows the interior of the Pacific American Fisheries cannery in Bellingham, Washington. Pallet-loads of canned salmon wait outside the large oven-like steam retorts where the fish was cooked.
