Summary edit

Description
English: Rhyolitic pumice floating in water from the Pleistocene of California, USA.

Pumice is a frothy-textured, extrusive igneous rock having felsic to intermediate to alkaline chemistry. It is lightweight for its size and many samples will float in water. Colors range from whitish to various shades of light gray, tan, and grayish-brown. The samples seen here are weathered rhyolitic pumice (= felsic chemistry) from an air-fall deposit formed by a caldera-forming explosive eruption in California. The source is the Long Valley Volcano, which had an enormous eruption during the Pleistocene, about 760,000 years ago. The Long Valley Volcano is located northeast of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California.

Stratigraphy: Bishop Tuff, Pleistocene, 760 ka

Locality: loose pieces from Sherwin Summit outcrop (also known as Big Pumice Roadcut), along the northern side of Route 395, immediately east of the Route 395-Lower Rock Creek Road intersection, east of the "town" of Tom's Place, Mono County, eastern California, USA (37° 33' 28.80" North latitude, 118° 39' 26.23" West longitude)
