English: Brigadier General Richard Condie Sanders, selected for the famous Halverson Detachment of B-24 crews, Sanders was deployed in early 1942 to Egypt to help stem the onslaught of Rommel's Afrika Korps, then at the gates of Cairo. He led his squadron in dozens of bombing raids at Tobruk, Bhengazi, Tripoli, and shipping in the Mediterranean, as well as the famous battle of El Alamain which sealed the fate Axis forces in Africa. He later commanded a B-26 group in Europe's Ninth Air Division, became its Chief of Staff, and ultimately its commander. In June 1944 he was promoted to Brigadier General, becoming at age 29 the youngest general officer in our armed forces. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and medals from Belgium, France, and Luxembourg. General Sanders was a native of Salt Lake City, Utah. |
