English: Russian Latvia stampless folded unpaid letter to France, 'Рига 22 юнь 1849' (RIGA June 22 1849) cancel, handstamp 'AUS RUSSLAND', 'PRUSSE/3/VALENCIENNES 11 JUIL 49', manuscript '40' decimes rate. Reverse BERLIN/8 7 transit, arrival backstamp 'Bordeaux'.

Details:

  • June 22 (Julian, or July 4 Gregorian) 1849 unpaid letter posted at Riga. The weight was assessed, expressed as 40 decimes and manuscript '40' applied. Reverse restated by manuscript '5. Porto 10'. 'RIGA June 22 1849' postmark applied;
Dobin: 40 type 1.18. Transit postmark for foreign mail, used from 1848-1850.
  • July 8 (Gregorian) 'BERLIN 8 7', typical Berlin transit postmark and 'AUS RUSSLAND' applied. Based on the usual presence of these Berlin postmarks this 'AUS RUSSLAND' marking is regarded as a Berlin mark.
Vandervelde: Aus Russland type B4, found from 1844-January 1846 (mail coach period) and from early 1848 to October 1849 (railroad period).
  • July 11 (Gregorian). French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris.
  • July 13 (32) Bordeaux arrival backstamp.
  • Recipient had to pay 40 decimes for the letter.
