Het Paleis van Willemsoord. De Geschiedenis van het commandementsgebouw der Koninklijke Marine te Den Helder (bouwjaar 1824) De Nationale vlootbasis te Den Helder ontstond in de negentiende eeuw. In de onherbergzame kop van Noord-Holland werd omstreeks 1800 een eenvoudige kielplaats voor schepen aangelegd. In de daaropvolgende decennia verrees in de nabijheid van Willemsoord een maritiem etablissement met een groot dok en diverse magazijnen en werkplaatsen. De werfdirectie kreeg een riant onderkomen op het etablissement. Dit directiehuis werd in de periode 1824-1826 gebouwd naar een ontwerp van Jakob Valk. Het imposante gebouw verwierf spoedig de bijnaam ‘het Paleis’. Gedurende de negentiende eeuw groeide de werf uit tot een groot marinecomplex met hospitaal, marinierskazerne en opleidingsinstituut voor adelborsten. Het Paleis bleef evenwel het bestuurlijk centrum. In de directe omgeving ontstond een levendige marinewijk. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het marine-etablissement Willemsoord te Den Helder definitief de thuishaven van de Nederlandse oorlogsvloot. Het voormalige Directiehuis annex Commandementsgebouw werd de residentie van de commandant der Zeemacht in Nederland. bron boek: "Het Paleis van Willemsoord..."
